The Adventure steps up a notch. Blog is moving
It wasn't so long ago I wrote my first blog post, about 4 months ago. It have been real fun and I have reached out to a lot more people that I ever thought I would. And it's because of you, my readers that I have gotten this opportunity. Without your appreciation, I wouldn't never have found the energy and joy to write all of the posts that I have done.
I have been asked by ServiceNow to start writing on their official community blog and joining their ranks of "Ask the experts". I feel honored and have gladly accepted the offer, but at the same time I feel no need to have two blogs about ServiceNow, so I will give 110% into writing for ServiceNow. I hope all of you that have been visiting this blog will continue with me to the ServiceNow community blog and who knows, I might even show up in videos in the future :)
Take Care and I hope to see you at the community and of course at Knowledge 16!
Kind Regards,
Göran Lundqvist

My new BFF: ACL watcher
I guess I'm not alone when saying that ACL isn't the favorite thing to play around with. At the moment I'm in the middle of upgrading from Fuji to Geneva and suddenly when watching a webinar I noticed something that changed my thoughts about ACL. Suddenly my ACL world got a huge chunk of love.

Hide the "three dotted menu" from End users
Right now I'm very into Geneva version since we are going to update from Fuji in 2 weeks. So I guess the couple of next posts will be about Geneva "problems" or new features. So this time I'm going to show how easy you can hide the "three dotted menu" from end users. What I'm talking about is the menu that contains the template choice, tag etc.

Upgraded to Geneva and scratched your head and wondering where did split layout go? Or perhaps grumble over that they switched position on Work notes & Additional comments? Well, here is a story for you =)

Inactivity Monitor.... What is that?
I ran into this by accident. I was looking at a Priority 1 incident and couldn't understand why it had an updated date when no one had done anything. It turned out it might be the work of the inactivity monitor...

Display duration in hours instead of days
One thing that has been annoying me a lot and I never got an answer to how or even if it's possible to change is how the duration is displayed. When something goes over 24 hours the duration suddenly shows 1 day... I know this and understand it when I see the numbers in a Task SLA, but I also know that for many normal users, they get confused and think that if the business duration is 1 day it means 1 work day(9 hours in our case) and not 3 work days(24 hours which it really is).

Fire an email notification from a schedule job
This question popped up in the community and I thought I might as well put the answer here as well. Question was how you could check if the valid to date is 30 days from now and then send a notification to the KB managers.

How to make 2 condition sets inside one script.
Sometimes you want to do a query where you want the records that match either at least one of two sets of conditions. There is a couple of ways, some easier than others and some easier to setup but harder to maintain etc. Here I give you a couple of examples.

Never use current.update in a Business Rule
The more I read about Business rules I notice that they are being used the wrong way by many people. Every rule has it's exceptions and I bet there is one here as well. But I can say that I haven't yet come up to a reason why you should use current.update in a Business Rule. I written a post about this and Business rules in general.

Having knowledge public with Version 3
As some of you may have noticed, upgrading to knowledge version 3 made a big impact by making it impossible to have the a knowledge base "real" public. What I mean with real public is that user can use the knowledge base without having to log in first. This was possible in version 2, but right now in version 3, the user need to be logged in, even if the user doesn't have any roles.
This was a critical problem for us since we had a deadline to migrate our current knowledge base into Servicenow. Here is the solution.

Import Word doc is finally here!
Finally we are able to import word documents with pictures into knowledge articles with an build in functionality.
This has been an issue for me and spend many hours trying to get the scripts found in the community to work for us in Fuji and it doesn't work flawless...
But now the hero has arisen. In Geneva, ServiceNow has heard the voices of the community and added the function to import a word document to a knowledge article with a few clicks.

Extend the time on your personal developer instance
We all know that our free personal dev instances have a limit of 10 days of inactivity, then it's returned to the pool and it's a pain to try and get a new one. Solution for many has been that once a week go in and do something, like create a client script. This just so your counter for inactivity should be reset. Well, now they have made a new function which help with this.

Part 3 - Giving the service status a nicer look.
On the last part I build the page without giving to much into how the whole thing looked. Now I had some time to look into this and also taken some help from colleagues with more eye for design than I will ever have. I also thrown in some HTML-fields and client script to automate the function of Valid to. This is how I did it.

Making your own "new Feature" window
Been having some trouble reaching out to the users with our own "new releases" and the information about our own fixes and new functionality. Looking at the community I realized that I wasn't alone with this problem. Today people are getting flooded with information through email so we threw that idea out the window. We also tried to publish the releases with knowledge articles, but the success hasn't been overwhelming.
So now I was thinking that perhaps we should do like ServiceNow and throw up a popup windows when user logs in. And this is how I did it.

PART 1 - The magical tables that ain't so easy to know about in the beginning
When I started to wander into the land of ServiceNow I had a hard time trying to do the easiest thing.
For example:
I had a Service Manager coming to me and asking a simple demand like: I want a list over all my groups that I mange and its members. It sounded like a easy thing but all I knew was that I could go the the "groups" list and then I hit the wall trying to figure out how to filter/config layout to give me the result I wanted.
And after searching quite some time since I didn't believe I was the only one with this problem I found the solution. There are a few tables that combines other tables by default. You just need to know them.

Hitting 1000+ views
I just want to say thanks for everyone visiting this blog. When I started for barely a month ago I didn't think I would have over 1000+ views in one month. This is what makes it worth the time =)
Keep coming back and I'll keep putting up stuff that I hope will help you in your ServiceNow Life.
And keep suggestion things to bring up. :)
Take care,

Request Clone... What do I get for my 10 cents?
After we went live and pretty much did our first clone we started to wonder if there wasn't anything else to configure about this cloning business.
Now after have been cloning a bit more and even a lot more when trying to see if the new configuration for cloning is working which is a pretty good work speed since your clone isn't closer than 4 hours away =)

Syntax editor macros... a tiny thing that makes the developer life a lot easier
This is one of the little things that I learned about when I went to the ServiceNow scripting course. And if I hadn't gone the course, I can promise you I would never have known about it.

Part 1: AngularJS, JSON & public UI Pages. How do I get it all together?
A thing that has been a pain in my back for quite some time now is how to publish something public and still make it fetch records from ServiceNow.
And before I begin I would like to send a special thanks to Rushit Patel on the ServiceNow community. Without the help from him, I wouldn't have gotten this far. Hopefully this blog will help others doing some amazing stuff with AngularJS and ServiceNow.
